THE EFFECTS OF A COMPLICATED, DISUNIFIED & DIS ORGANIZED TERTIARY EDUCATION SYSTEM.
From school riots, to warning strikes then to indefinite strike actions, Welcome to the Public Sector of the Nigerian Education System. The Beautiful complex system that has produced Billionaires, Governors, Technocrats, Business Moguls and so many top members of the society high class cadre. This System is what should be described as “Orderliness in Disorderliness”. A system that produces less drop outs than the organized structure of the western word. All hail the very Mysterious Nigerian Educational System!!!.
There is a saying that goes “If you have never experienced strike, You never went to a Nigerian school”. Yes, Strike is a constant experience in tertiary education in this beloved country. Strike is so deep in the system that The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Since the year 2001 carries out strike actions every 4 years (2001,2005,2009,2013,2017). So we know that in the year 2021, ASUU would be hosting another strike action. It’s inevitable, it’s in their history {joking}. During this strike action periods, what do Student’s actually do????. That’s a very Good question there . According to seun, A Mass communication Student of Yaba college of technology. He said “ I spent the period preparing for the remainder of the abandoned semester”. According to Damilola, who is also a student of that same department said “I went to work to earn an income till school resumed”. Good to see how the strike action is making Students productive but the side effects of it is that it actually extends the period a student is meant to run a program. Imagine a student spending 5 ½ years to run a 4 year program.
Another Factor in Nigerian Education is Uniformity. Tertiary Institutions lack Uniformity in the country. The system is so dis organized that Every school Resumes for a Fresh Session at its convenience. Candidates who actually sit for a particular year Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams most times do not resume school until the next calender year. The Good part of this Un-uniformity is that a student can actually run 2 programs consecutively in 2 different schools. I know it sounds absurd, but it is true. It is a possibility to run an ND program in a polytechnic and a B.sc program in a University provided that they happen to be in the same Geographical Location.
For Every bad side, there happen to be a Good side. Exploring the possibilities on Nigerian Tertiary Education actually gave me the believe that the system is not a failure but instead it’s creating innovators which I believe is the key to the next Generation. Individuals who came out of this system are not orthodox but Progressives who change along with the flows and demands. Some call it crooked, but I call it the best system educational system a human can ever go trough.
